“Good News, Everyone” June 22, 2006

Spartacus, who's one sharp guy, has pointed out this blog could use some good news. While recent events online have made it hard for me to find much positive to say, I can bring this to your attention.
Futurama is coming back!
Shakespeare's Sister has the scoop, and you can read Zach's take over there. For my money, I'm hugely excited. Zach's rightly worried that The Simpsons has gone down hill because it's gone on far too long, and he's right about that, but Futurama is different for a couple reasons:
- Groening wants to continue it, and had planned on ending the Simpsons and keeping Futurama; he'll be continuing the project he believes has the most potential, and that's a good sign.
- Futurama's four seasons are as good as any four of the Simpsons, and the Simpsons had at least six really good seasons, so I'm sure a few more episodes won't mess everything up.
- Futurama, unlike The Simpsons, has characters who actually change over time: Fry is dumb, but he's still a classic hero in many senses, adapting to a new world, falling in love, overcoming obstacles, fitting in. Homer's only change has been to go through a process of dumbening, while Fry has matured as a character. That alone will force the show to go in a direction other than "less coherent" like the Simpsons.
So I greet this announcement with unmitigated enthusiasm. Maybe Al Gore will even reprise his role as protector of the space/time continuum. A man can dream…

That IS good news! (“It’s a suppository!”) You’re completely right about the Simpsons. It was great for at least 5 or 6 seasons but enough is enough. I’ve only laughed out loud at one episode in the last several years. Of course, I keep the GOOD seasons on DVD for repeat viewing. Futurama continues to make me laugh until I cry.
so stoked about futurama coming back. great news indeed!
Huzzah! very exciting, that.
Also, dumbening… that’s not even a word! ;)
Okay, so I have 18 months to two years to get cable or a dish so we can have Comedy Central and thus can watch Futurama. Good to know!
OHhh….I cannot wait.
