I love it when the bad guys lose January 27, 2007

And we’re one step closer to that today–the Gemological Institute of America has decided to grade laboratory-produced “cultured” diamonds. Not only are these diamonds less expensive than their mined counterparts, they are much better on the environment and don’t support an industry that has caused vast human suffering. I would never consider buying a mined diamond, given the practices of those who sell them, and I’m rooting for this wonderful application of science and technology to put them out of business forever.

Real life would be more fun if it ended like Trading Places, where Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy get revenge on the Duke Brothers and leave them broke. Wouldn’t it be lovely if more of those who have become rich on the suffering of others would suffer such a fate? Unfortunately, as we all know, bad guys don’t always wear black hats and not everyone ends up with Jamie Lee Curtis on a tropical island. But we can dream.
