I knew piracy was great! February 13, 2007

As a pirate-lover, I don’t have much use for those who call people who merely steal movies and are annointed real pirates. But as Kyso points out, anything that makes George Lucas stop making movies can’t be all bad.
Maybe the movie industry would make more money if they made a product people were willing to purchase. I know most of the people I know who download free media are happy to pay for work of truly high quality. I personally just purchased The Departed on DVD, because it was a great flick and well worth repeated viewings with cool special features. But if we take a very average, if entertaining, movie from the last year, say Superman, I’m not going to spend a dime.
I’m also too lazy to bother pirating it, but I’m sure there are a lot of people who make decisions in similar ways. In general, people will pay for a high-quality product: they know it’s important to support things they like.
When I was in Ecuador, we bought a copy of Superman from the video store downstairs. For $2. :-)
