Today is Back Up Your Birth Control Day, and I’d like to take this time to remind us how essential it is that we spread the word: if your birth control fails, you do have options. Women 18 and older can get Emergency Contraception over-the-counter, while minors still need prescriptions.

But as we have seen, many pharmacists refuse to dispense EC because of their love of pushing their religious beliefs upon others–especially if those others are sexually-active women. So if you or your partner could potentially get pregnant, having EC on hand, just in case, would be wise. Spread the word: if a condom breaks, women still have options. Having back up birth control on hand is wise, and every woman should know she has that option.

Now a word to anti-choicers:

I mention this because I believe people have the right to control their own bodies, and because preventing unwanted pregnancy should be universally acknowledged as a good thing. Pro-choicers should be unequivocally for EC, and anti-choicers, if they are honest about their goals, should be just as concerned. After all, if you don’t like abortions, then you would be well served to help us make sure that women who don’t want to be pregnant don’t accidentally get pregnant.

So if you’d like to see the number of abortions drop, then you should join with us in supporting a woman’s right to have access to birth control of all varieties. And if you don’t support EC, then it’s time to admit that it isn’t because you oppose abortion, but because you want to force women to have babies.
