More people than ever are reading this blog… March 27, 2007

…and it appears to be because of men kissing. I’ve had a steady readership for some time now, but in recent weeks my daily totals have gone up 50% or more, and the only pattern I can see is that any post where I reference men kissing gets tons of love. While I’m happy that people are enjoying these posts, I do wonder what that says about my blog…

Republicans cry about Gore, real world plays world’s smallest violin March 26, 2007

This time it’s Representative Westmoreland:

As Gore visited with former colleagues on the House floor around lunchtime Wednesday, Represenative Westmoreland argued that the Democrat was violating recently enacted ethics rules rescinding floor privileges for former congressmen working as agents of a foreign government.

Because Gore serves as an adviser to Britain on climate change, Westmoreland said, he shouldn’t have been allowed. The third-term lawmaker, who  represents northern Columbus & Harris County said it was “in total violation of the House rules.” He said Democrats don’t even pay attention to their own rules.

Translation: “I have no substantive response. Therefore I will bitch.”

These thugs don’t do so well when they don’t get to make the rules. But at least they’re perfecting their whiny six-year old bit.

Chuck Norris should stick to kicking and “acting” March 26, 2007

When Chuck Norris started writing for WorldNutDaily, I was thrilled. His writing was stupid and hilarious enough to be perfect for that far-right bastion of idiocy. But I fear I may have underestimated him. The sheer intellectual dishonesty of trying to get the Bible-as-literature into schools so as to teach the Bible-as-Fact without getting sued is not just wrong, it’s contemptible. I still wonder why these people thing Jesus would approve of lying to get their way.

I’m all for the Bible as Literature, and the Koran as Literature, and so on down the line. I’m dead set against using that as an excuse to indoctrinate students, which is unconstitutional, repugnant, and generally disgusting.

Why do Creationists hate animals? March 26, 2007

I’ve long thought that you should be extremely cautious of trusting anyone who willingly inflicts pain on animals. The kind of person who kicks a dog or tries to tip a cow is someone you should not leave alone with people you care about. *

If you agree with that thesis, then what do you make of this little gem from Ken Ham?

[Creationist Ken] Ham argued that poodles are the result of a downward process. They did not just develop from dog genes, but from cursed copies of dog genes.

“Dogs like poodles are the result of the Curse!” Ham wrote in his essay. “Each time I arrive home and our pet Bichon races to the door to meet me, I am reminded of my sin, that I, in Adam, sinned and ushered in the Fall.”

Ham doesn’t say “and then I kick the cursed beast,” and I doubt he does. Like many people with twisted ideas, he probably actually acts as would someone with a less twisted ideology: basic decency restrains much evil. But if what he says is true, Ham looks at a pet as evidence of his own evil. (No word yet on whether the incredibly useful Working and Shepherd breeds, say, are supposed to be twisted mutants, or indeed of what breed of dog was the only one to come off the Ark.) No one needs tell most of us of the utility of breeding, or the the strong evidence it gives for the role of selective pressures in evolution. But beyond Ham’s Creationist idiocy is something deeper: he sees his pet as evidence of sin, not as a loyal companion. Ken Ham looks at his dog as evidence of a fallen world. I don’t know a thousand pages of refutations could speak so strongly to his pathologies as does that simple fact.

*no, this isn’t a knock on everyone who’s ever been in the meat industry–but you can kill an animal for food and still be humane

Why won’t Bush close Gitmo? March 24, 2007

because of that pesky constitution. Bush has said he’d like to close the prison, which is a huge black eye internationally (otherwise he’d no doubt enjoy the chance to continue to abuse those who have been convicted of no crime), but he won’t do so. Why not? Because if he does so, he’ll lose the right to argue that the prisoners aren’t protected by Constitutional Rights.

Remember folks, it ain’t illegal if the people you’re holding are brown.

Memo to Michael Savage March 23, 2007

I’ve long known you were an idiotic, hate-filled, reprehensible stain on the underpants of life, but when you mock transgendered people and encourage discrimination against them in response to the murder of a transgendered individual, don’t think you’re going to get a pass on it. Quoth the bigot:

But when I wake up as an adult and I find out that they’re actually all Democrats today, passing themselves off as normal, I’m sorry, someone’s gotta say this is a freak show, time out. And what’s this sympathy, constant sympathy for sexually confused people? Why should we have constant sympathy for people who are freaks in every society? I didn’t say hurt the freaks. I didn’t say do anything to the freaks.

But you know what? You’re never gonna make me respect the freak. I don’t want to respect the freak. The freak ought to be glad that they’re allowed to walk around without begging for something. You know, I’m sick and tired of the whole country begging, bending over backwards for the junkie, the freak, the pervert, the illegal immigrant. All of them are better than everybody else. Sick. Everything is upside down.

You’re right about one thing, Mr. Savage: no one is going to make you respect anyone. Just as there is no one who can make me think of you as anything but a hate-filled psychopath who enables violence against people who make you personally uncomfortable.

Go back to masturbating to fantasies of overhearing men fucking each other, you pathetic fuck.

Memo to James Inhofe: you lose, motherf*cker. March 21, 2007

Inhofe has lost, thoroughly. His neocon revolution is over, killed by its own hypocrisy and corruption, and he’s lost the battle on climate change, with even evangelicals and Bush admitting there is a problem. And so he does what every pathetic, desperate loser tries: to be a bully.

Unfortunately for him, his opponents were Al Gore, who knows more about climate change than Inhofe knows about being a jackass, which says a lot, and Barbara Boxer, who remembers what happened in 2000.

Boxer: “You’re not making the rules.”

Check out the whole clip at Crooks and Liars. You don’t want to miss this one.

Notice how the Republican spin machine has misfired terribly now that they can’t control image in congress. Inhofe comes off as an ineffectual thug, trying to score points by refusing to be corrected. That’s stopped working for Dubya, and it ain’t gonna work for Inhofe.

I say again, Fuck the Man.

In related news, people who complain about abuse of men and claim to be concerned for the wellbeing of feminists, women or anyone except rich white boys are full of shit. They are the man. Fuck ‘em.

Ben Goldacre nails it:

“Ignorance is like cholera,” [Sir Muir Gray] says. “It cannot be controlled by the individual alone: it requires the organised efforts of society.”
