Sweet Jesus, I think I agree with Bill O’Reilly June 1, 2007

I’m devastated, but Bill O may have a point.
But do you understand what the New York Times wants, and the far-left want? They want to break down the white, Christian, male power structure, which you’re a part, and so am I, and they want to bring in millions of foreign nationals to basically break down the structure that we have. In that regard, Pat Buchanan is right. So I say you’ve got to cap with a number.
I didn’t think he’d ever actually admit that his real motivation was keeping white Christian males in power, but now that he did, I can say: Bill O, you’re absolutely right. I am thrilled with the idea of breaking down a power structure that allows tools like you to have a national voice for spreading lies when reasonable people are silenced due to their orientation, gender, skin color and religion.
Very nice, Bill, for spotting our real agenda. Just don’t forget what yours is.
Okay, the title of your post gave me a brief panic attack, but once I saw the text, I was with you. I had the same thought when I saw earlier today what BillO had said — exactly! That’s exactly what I want! Way to be perceptive for a change, Bill!
Hmm. well. I suppose, if we’re headed that way, we’ll get a chance to see how it works out. I’m thinking you won’t like the new power structures as much as you think you will. Time will tell, cliche out.
LQ: nice to know I can still draw a reaction, I guess. ;)
Jonathan: I can tell you this, a power structure where white Christian men hold pretty much all the power hasn’t been a good thing. You’re argument that “the next thing might not be good, either,” isn’t really persuasive: staying with a bad system because we don’t have perfect certainty about the future isn’t a good idea.
I think the problem with any power structure is that it inherently has superordinate and subordinate members, and they are given varying rights and privileges commensurate with their positions within the power structure.
Can we ever stop having power strucures in human society? Every poster in these comments seems to think not, and I probably concur with that conclusion. The question, then, is what sort of structure is superior? Perhaps one that isn’t based on arbitrary matters like race and ethnic background (of which religion is certainly a part). I, for one, like the notion of all humans being created equal, and that idea implies that we should seek a power structure where there is less divergence between the least and the most powerful…
But what do I know? :-)
The notion that LuapHacim hints at would be nice. And if “white christian men” that had been in power had acted more christianly, they might have had better results.. EB, if I thought my arguments would be persuasive to you, I’d be a bigger fool than you already think me. :) I’m settling for told you so status at the moment. :)
Arbitrary matters like race and ethnic background, religion, and dare I add sexuality seem to be the factors that humans choose to form their politics around. Find me a country/nation where one of those is not a unifying factor of the political majority?
As far as divergence between least and most powerful, there’s two ways to go about it- bring the least up, or the powerful down. You’d think with the 6k years of humanity, we’d have found a more perfect way by now… Everyone that’s tried has been wiped out by a new, stronger power. I’m saying that new power(s) on the horizon looks alot worse than the status quo. Vacuums, folks, vacuums. When you destroy the giant, you have to not only hope your ideas can win out, you have to ensure they do…. otherwise, the next giant may be even worse. It’s as simple as why debate needs to prove the alternative is better than the status quo. Will the world/USA be better off without those “white christians” in power? I don’t think so, EB does. I hope for his tolerant sake, he’s right.
[...] June 2, 2007 Posted by Evil Bender in wingnuts, News and politics. trackback Yup, just yesterday I agreed with Bill O’Reilly that evil progressives like me wanted to get rid of the white Chri…. I wondered–with Bill having finally shown something like insight, would I find myself [...]

If someone I didn’t know personally had said that, I’d assume they were a troll and ignore them or replace the post with bunny videos. I’ll charitably assume that wasn’t your intent.

Not much of a debate, I feel. A power structure which doesn’t reward merit and equality, but rather is biased without regard to merit is flawed and should be torn down. You can argue all you want we won’t do better. Good thing that most people would still like to try.
You’ve argued before for the status quo, so I know you’re serious, but in truth we have come a long way in the last few centuries toward making the world more fair for more people. We have a helluva long way to go, but I’d take today over the dark ages anytime.
