Ahmadinejad: this is a big deal? September 24, 2007

As you no doubt know, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke at Columbia University today, to the ire of any number of breathless people.

I must say I don’t get it: we don’t need to silence the views of extremists. We should get them out in the open, where they can be properly rebuked. Ideas are silenced by those who are afraid of them. Ahmadinejad said their aren’t gay people in Iran, for god’s sake. Let him make a fool of him self. God knows our President goes abroad and does that often enough.

Just too funny. I heard him say that there are no gays in Iran on NPR and the audience laughed at him, not with him :)

IMO, Dubya is afraid of Ahmadinejad because when he looks at him, he only sees himself.

I agree. If we’re so free and open, then why do we deny people the right to discuss their views, however extreme they might be? It doesn’t seem to make much sense.

I feel this way about bigotry, too: I prefer it when people come out in public and say racist, sexist, homophobic shit to when they act civil to hide their true bigotry: when it’s in the open, it’s much easier to counter and deal with. When it’s pushed into the shadows, people start to forget about the threat or even–like Tony Snow–convince themselves their isn’t one.

Hey Evil! Did you see Ahmadinejad on “60 Minutes,” too? The reporter made such an ASS out of himself–and made Ahmadinejad look good. I watch the Columbia speech yesterday, too. And yes, I laughed at the “lack of phenomenon of homosexuality in Iran.”

I didn’t laugh at the rude introduction and closure the MC gave. That, coupled with Scott Pelley’s performance on “60 Minutes” (he asked Ahmadinejad what he “admired” about Pres. Bush–then seemed insulted that Ahmadinejad simply turned the question on him), only gives fuel to the fire of “ugly Americans.”

Americans are, in those instances, beyond ugly.

Sera:

Indeed! Ahmadinejad’s views aren’t worthy of much respect, but he is a foreign leader on American soil and we should treat him better. After all, we expect people to treat our President with the respect due his position, even if the person holding that position is a lying “cowboy” who is afraid of horses.

Americans look ugly indeed from this, not to mention cowardly! Are we so pathetic that we must run around screaming how we don’t agree with Ahmadinejad? It seems we were. So why are we so afraid we’ll come off like syncophants of a foolish man?

Sadly, I suspect that question contains its own answer.

Is Ahmadinejad any more foolish then our dear leader? Both can be viewed as extremist….
