How to know if a wingnut is lying to you, “mom and dad” edition October 15, 2007

When they tell you something.

Case in point: The fine folks WingNutDaily and much of the rest of the radical right are in an absolute tizzy over the supposed banning of the words “mom” and “dad” from California Classrooms. Says WND:

“Mom and Dad” as well as “husband and wife” effectively have been banned from California schools under a bill signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who with his signature also ordered public schools to allow boys to use girls restrooms and locker rooms, and vice versa, if they choose.

[. . .]

“SB 777 will result in reverse discrimination against students with religious and traditional family values,” said Meredith Turney, legislative liaison for Capitol Resource Institute. “These students have lost their voice as the direct result of Gov. Schwarzenegger’s unbelievable decision. The terms ‘mom and dad’ or ‘husband and wife’ could promote discrimination against homosexuals if a same-sex couple is not also featured.

“Parents want the assurance that when their children go to school they will learn the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic – not social indoctrination regarding alternative sexual lifestyles. Now that SB777 is law, schools will in fact become indoctrination centers for sexual experimentation,” she said.

Indoctrination centers for sexual experimentation, you say? How could something so shocking have gone unreported in the mainstream media? Perhaps because it’s complete BS.

This rumor first appeared more than a year ago, when California was in the process of changing it’s legal code. The change added “sexual orientation” to the list of things schools could not discriminate against, but of course any legal protection for anybody but white Christian heterosexuals sets off the lunatic fringe. Indeed, WND ran an almost identical piece on this same subject a year ago.

But maybe this new legislation is really offensive. Maybe the far left is indeed hiding their anti-parent agenda in the bill. Let’s check, shall we? HB 777, the one in question, reads, in part:

It is the policy of the State of California to afford all persons in public schools, regardless of their disability, gender, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic that is contained in the definition of hate crimes set forth in Section 422.55 of the Penal Code, equal rights and opportunities in the educational institutions of the state. The purpose of this chapter is to prohibit acts which that are contrary to that policy and to provide remedies therefor.

Read the rest: it’s of the same cloth. What I just love about this is how clearly it demonstrates what the wingnut leadership is up to. California passes a common-sense law forbidding state-sponsored discrimination, and the wingnuts (who themselves are not only covered by the legislation but aren’t the ones being discriminated against in the first place) lie to each other about what is actually happening.

In this case it’s just even more apparent than usual: they’re recycling an 18-month-old lie to try to stir up activism against a law they’re too politically savvy to (openly) object to on its own merits. So it’s lie, spin, obfuscate, and count on no one to check the accuracy of the claims. And so far it’s working: Red State and Free Republic, among others, have happily disseminated these lies.

So, this is essentially just like that recycled E mail forward I received from my wingnutty grandparents about the A-rab store owners who celebrated after 9/11 and the budwiser guy who refused to sell beer to them, garnering community support and getting every other distributor to stop as well…a good ole ‘murkin ass kickin’ I believe the last line was……

I know these people live to believe that A-rabs owning stores are a threat. Libruls are taking away their religion and their right to proselytize to everyone, Their children are being brainwased by the librul edumacation system and people who question the president are treasonous liars.

isn’t that what Timothy McVey believed?

Just askin’

Yeah, I suspect that a lot of the “they’re took our religion” silliness is because many of those who put forward those claims–especially those in power–would love to enforce their will on others, and so they can’t help but project that same desire on to others.

Dominionist.

I read the Michelle Goldberg book (Kingdom Coming) some time ago and was taken aback by the plan to bring things like Health care, addiction care, sex education and even credit counseling to the Church. It seemed like the grand plan is to privatize these social programs and have the needy seek them out through their mega churches (which, no doubt you are aware are now being brought to you by McDonalds, Starbucks and KFC—and my Favorite closed on Sunday place: Chic-fil-A). All they need to gain access to the services are repentance, acceptance of Jesus Christ and a pledge to join the church.

This sounds similar to the inquisition. Repent your heresy and we will help you. They just burn you at the stake anyway. Today’s version of burning someone at the stake is leaving them behind if they don’t fully accept the church doctrine.

When I read David Kuo’s book, this was a part of the Plan they all came up with when discussing the role of the Office of Faith Based programs. That is something that really scared me and made me see that they mean business.

It about power, religious or political, and using the church doesn’t matter them. Power doesn’t corrupt, it attracts the corruptible. And the Big Lie is a tactic as old war, during which it is called propaganda. History is full of such horrid abuses, so this is nothing new, just stupider than most.

The objectional part of this bill is not the part that talks about non discrimination. That law is already in place in the public school system. The objectional part of the bill is the part about the curriculum. It’s a double standard. We don’t see Biblical studies or Famous Biblical figures or the Love story of Mary and Joseph or how to repent and be saved in public schools. That group is in a nondiscriminate class too. This bill is mandating an all inclusive, pro gay curriculum. I just wish everyone could just agree to disagree and leave religion and sexual preference out of the curriculum. Just because people have different beliefs does not mean we can’t all get along. The government defining morality in the public school system is a slippery slope to start traveling.
