Looks like I’m not the only one fed up with the conflation of social and biological concepts of race November 19, 2007

Atrios weighs in on the topic of race-as-a-category. He’s right on, of course. My prediction: his comments, just like mine on the same topic, will be decried by those who would prefer to downplay the very real differences between race-as-social-concept and race-as-biological-concept. Naturally, those same people will continue to pretend that the social realities of racism don’t affect the scientific discussion on that topic. Such claims do a disservice both to social realities and to science.

As an aside, and going along with Atrios, I haven’t seen anything like a legitimate refutation of Gould’s argument in The Mismeasure of Man
