How the Republican National Convention will be like O Brother, Where Art Thou? August 20, 2008

In the Coen Brothers’ fantastic O Brother, Where Art Thou? Governor Pappy is trying to find a campaign strategy:

Junior: “Well people like that reform. Maybe we should get us some.”

Pappy: “I’ll reform you, you soft-headed sonofabitch! How we gonna run reform when we’re the damn incumbent!”

Someone forgot to tell the Republicans that you can’t run reform as the incumbent, though:

Country First: 2008 Republican National Convention to Highlight Service, Reform, Prosperity and Peace

No word on how to highlight service with a service-dodging President, how to run on Prosperity when you’ve let the economy go to shit, and how to run on peace when you lie to start wars. Presumably, they’ll do all these things through the reform.

It appears the Republicans are running on being different from Republicans. Given how terrible there brand is right now, I suppose I can’t blame them.

There’s a commercial I’ve been seeing — I don’t know whether it’s running nationally or not — that begins: “Washington is broken. John McCain knows it. We’re worse off than we were four years ago…” Every time it comes on, I scream at the TV, “And who did _you_ vote for four years ago, you bum?”

Erm. And they’re having Bush & Cheney speak at this thing? How exactly does that fit with the theme?

How do you combat the message “Change”?

Hmmm …

….

I got it. Throw reform in there. We want to sound like we want change as well, but we can’t just copy Barack Obama now, can we?

Morons.

lol wow if u look at the republican convention set up for speakers it’s not good for the GOP’S, there going to have Bush, Cheney, Lieberman, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the V.P to speak at the convention, wow how stupid can u be to put that together. No wonder Obama will get a 10 to 15 point boost maybe even more if u compare it to the democrats convention which is of course Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden and Michelle Obama. Why in the world would McCain have Bush and Cheney in his convention, this would actually bring him closer to Bush and his policies. For the love of god why the hell do people want to vote for another 4 more years of failed policies, and i don’t why people think that McCain will bring down the middle classes taxes, McCain will tax the hell out of the middle class while the rich get richer and we do need offshore drilling wtf is wrong with people do they really want another oil spill, look at what happened to california. Besides we will not get the freaking oil for another 10 years, oh ya and did u know when McCain was a prisoner of war out of the 5 of them JOHN McCAIN was the ONLY ONE TO GIVE UP INFORMATION TO OUR ENEMIES, THAT MY FRIENDS IS NOT A WAR HERO THAT IS A COWARD DISGUISED AS A REAL SOLDIER, I SHOULD NOW I SERVED MY COUNTRY PROUDLY IN IRAQ. VOTE FOR OBAMA IF U WANT A REAL CHANGE, BUT IF U WANT THE SAME BULL VOTE FOR MCCAIN

Exactly what I was thinking–the GOP needs campaign tips from Pappy O’Daniel (I found your blog looking for the Pappy O’Daniel quote so that I could make the same point myself).
