Misogynist film trailer really has to see to be believed January 22, 2009

PZ, in an apparent quest to ruin my morning, posted a video promoting a Christianist film called The Monstrous Regiment of Women, which starts with Phyllis Schlafly, and actually gets more odious from there, including a woman who claimed to work for a family planning provider whose goal was to get teens pregnant so they’d have more abortions, and a Quiverfullwho says that “the World hates children” because not every woman has as many children as is biologically possible. The cast of this promo is all female, but the film itself, whose tagline is “Extolling Femininity / Blasting Feminism” is a Gunn Brothersfilm, produced by a couple of anti-women, anti-choice, homophobic whackaloons. And, of course, they’re male whackaloons. Who better to lecture women about the evils of equal rights?
For maximum horror/hilarity (depending upon where you fit into the righteous fury/full snark attack continuim), you can check out the films FAQ, which includes some real gems:
Is this a woman bashing movie?
On the contrary, our all-female cast includes some of the most respectable and godly women of our time. It is through their own words that feminism is exposed for its inherent hatred of women. This movie seeks to expose the true beauty, joy, and peace that come from a biblical view of womanhood and femininity.
. . .
Does the movie show both sides?
We have allowed viewpoints from feminists who in their own words describe feminism from their own perspective; this allows us to be fairer in our analysis without creating unrealistic Strawmen (and Women).
Remember, folks, this from a film that suggests that pro-choice family planning groups, which have undoubtedly prevented more abortions than every anti-choice wingnut in the United States combined, are secretly tricking kids into being sexually active in order to provide them with abortions. Yup, no “Strawwomen” here!
(And for those of you who are curious, here is the text of the 16th Century work from which the film takes its title. More on that from me when I have time, no doubt. For now, I’ll content myself with noting that these idiots respect women so much that they take their cues from a reactionary 16th Century mysogninist douchebag.)
Bonus points to the commenter who finds the most outrageously dishonest claim made by anyone appearing in the film.
Ok that seriously makes me want to throw things, sharp things or crawl under my desk. Call me naive, but I am still amazed when I see stuff like this. How can they actually believe this? How?
How can they actually believe this? How?
I think the most reasonable answer is “deep self-hatred developed and encouraged by the patriarchy.” Look at Schlafly–she’s made a lucrative career, complete with a public forum, by saying that women aren’t qualified to compete with men in business and should stay home.
Gotta love the ‘walk in my shoes’ fallacy. One must be a woman to advocate for equality for all?
Here’s to equal rights for all women, born and unborn!
I used to believe in all of that stuff….. I got married at 16(at my reproductive prime) and had six children. I was 34 years old when I finally got out of that restrictive lifestle. I got a GED, went to college, got a divorce, and now am living the life I never knew I could have. I have a loving new husband who treats me with respect-as an equal, freedom, a six figure income, and my children are no longer being screwed up by the misguided and mistaken people of the church. I know now that God makes us to be unique and trying to force people into certain roles based on their gender is damaging. Thank you for exposing this. You’d be amazed at how many people really believe this crap!
The reason I don’t do drugs anymore is that they just can’t compete with the insanity that is the real world. A film that seriously says PP is deliberately knocking up teens to give them abortions? Chronic just can’t compete.
This makes me sick, just sick. But at the same it brings home the point that there is still work to be done if there are people who still really believe this bs.
couldn’t bring myself to watch the trailor. I would just get more angry and I’m already angry.
ow.
I clearly fall in the snarky range of the continuum. This is pretty incredulous, I didn’t know that many of female friends with only one child our, in fact, socialists. :( I can’t hang out with commies, so I’m heartbroken. The “kind compliments” (instead of the unkind kind) page offers hope: “All I’ve wanted to do since I was 9 years old was have a family and stay home to raise my kids!! I didn’t know I could do that.”
They saved another life! :)
I really wanna write a scathing, snarky review of the DVD (maybe just to prove that not all Christians hate feminism). Would it be wrong for me to buy it? Keep in mind, I’m a male, so if any females responding could kindly not “tell” me what to do. As women, I only seek your counsel (and even then, I’m just doing it for show).
