Felix: thanks for your thoughts! A couple points: valid meanings are ones that are generally supported by evidence and not contradicted by evidence. So, there isn't one "right" meaning, but there are invalid readings (e.g. if you claimed a work created in 1999 was about the 9/11 attacks, you'd have a invalid reading).

I don't want my argument to undercut communication. It is absolutely true that much writing--and much art in general--has something to say (though that may not be the same as a "message," exactly). But even leaving aside the fact that clearly authors aren't always aware of every aspect of every choice they make, sometimes communication is undercut by simple mistakes (grammatical errors that reverse meaning; misstatements of fact, etc.)

So the first part of your statement , "she has a specific message in it," is true: the attempt in the note was to communicate a message (though note that not all art shares this goal); the second part doesn't follow, though: having an intended meaning doesn't control meaning. It merely influences it. To argue otherwise would be to accept a particularly hard-line version of the authorial intent argument, and would require one to accept that something can only be in a text if the author intended them to be there.

Nice piece! I didnt realise that there is a possible third way of looking at meaning, apart from reader response and authorial intent. I found this a very persuasive method, however the question that one has to ask is, who decides which of the "mulplicity of meanings" is valid? Just because someone can defend his "meaning" with a persuasive critical deployment, does it make this meaning valid? Do you reckon then that this third way of looking at the meaning veers more towards reader
I think the real problem at the heart of all your arguments is the question of COMMUNICATION! Do we beleive the author had a message to the reader? If so, then the author controls/determines the meaning of the text, and the task of the reader is to DISCOVER that meaning. The way you read a letter from your wife/husband would be different from the way you read an anonymous unsigned letter you have found in the park. You know your wife/husband & and you beleive she/he has a message for you. You can not simply assign any meaning you wish to it. She has a specific message in it, she controls meaning!

and didn’t the Lord had to create the manuscripts for the bible through His prophets and servants in order for us to know the truth of how we came about…and how we should live…if He didn’t then we’d all be doomed for hell by listening to the crap you men say

I think this may win the coveted "most circular argument ever" title!

This post really is worthless with respect to getting to the bottom of your premise-- that Sanger is nuts (and I assume you also consider him wrong). Why wouldn't you spring for the $25 report and actually read it! Then you could speak intelligently on what Sanger is proposing. As far as whether $25 is too much or not really isn't your call. He may need the money to fund other efforts of a public service nature and not simply looking to amass the $ for his own personal wealth- we simply don't know- but to randomly declare it's too much is just not a defensible statement.
